The State Department issued a statement Monday that said Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, senior advisers to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, would discuss “efforts to make progress for the four pillars of the Singapore Summit statement, including achieving the final denuclearization of North Korea that could be fully verified.”

Kim and US President Donald Trump signed an agreement at their historic summit last June to clean the Korean Peninsula from nuclear weapons, but both sides have been at loggerheads over the pace of Pyongyang’s efforts to end its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea warned last week that it would consider reviving its nuclear weapons program if the United States did not lift crippling economic sanctions against the regime.

North Korea also wants a peace agreement with the United States and South Korea that will officially end the 1950-53 Korean War. The war separated communist North Korea from democratic South Korea.
